Compaction
__________
The following article is designed to give a brief
description of all the compaction programs available for
the Archimedes, and will hopefully help you to decide
which one is the best for you. As we're featuring hard
disks in the hints and tips section this month, I'll try
and focus on using the packing programs with these
peripherals, but as they are all round reviews, you don't
have to own a hard disk to get something from the article.
Many of the following programs have been reviewed before,
but never all together - I hope to compare them, and
indicate which packages are best for which jobs. The usual
ratings aren't really applicable here, but see the
conclusion for the ultimate low down on the packages.
Before I start, I'll first give a brief description of
what compaction is for all you innocent novices. There are
many types of compaction used in the Acorn world, but they
are all mathematical methods that take ordinary data (eg.
ASCII text, or sprite files) and reduce the amount of disk
space it takes up, by storing it in a more efficient way.
To give an example of very basic compaction in theory : If
you had a some binary data (1s and 0s) that looked like
this : 11111000111111. You would replace it with binary
